Exploring connection to place

Through my words, questions, and prompts here - I hope to open up conversations about our connection to place. And by place I mean region, room, rural landscape, urban landscape - any sort of environment where we’re making our lives.

In the past, I think “environmental writing” felt sort of like a one lane highway - a lot of it sounded the same and was tied in with adventure culture or biology. I think all of that is still valid and beautiful - but I think there are so many places where other people can connect to the land around them, and speak to the way it’s changing, what it means, what has been lost, or how a certain landscape needs to be protected. Or simply the way place makes us feel. It’s that flow - that interconnectedness and mutual health - that fascinates me and that I think we need to value more.

This is me casually sitting atop an alligator sculpture in Eastern North Carolina in the 80s, with a bad haircut and great loafers.
